The moral of Beowulf is that it is better to die young with heroism and virtue than to grow to a ripe old age being cowardly and avoiding your responsibilities. Beowulf shows great courage and fortitude as he protects the community by fighting Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon Wiglaf.
Much of Beowulf is devoted to articulating and illustrating the Germanic heroic code, which values strength, courage, and loyalty in warriors; hospitality, generosity, and political skill in kings; ceremoniousness in women; and good reputation in all people.
There are three main themes found in Beowulf. These themes are the importance of establishing identity, tensions between the heroic code and other value systems, and the difference between a good warrior and a good king.
Beowulf displays his archetypal heroism immediately in the tale, saving Heorot and protecting Hrothgar and the citizens of his village. He is shown in this instance as strong and mighty, as well as upstanding, upholding civility and championing good over evil.
Historical Importance. Being the oldest surviving English poem from the Anglo-Saxon period, Beowulf gives the reader insight into the history of England and what eventually became British Literature.
Beowulf was also a hero because he fended-off Grendel and stopped him from killing any more of Hrothgar’s men. In conclusion, Beowulf is my hero because of his outstanding fighting skills, his great strength, and finally his great loyalty. These are all major traits of a great hero.
Over the years, the Beowulf story and its characters have inspired many artists to make adaptations in the form of films, graphic novels, comic books, theatrical plays, and more. John Gardner’s celebrated novel, Grendel, is by far one of the best-known adaptations of the epic poem.
Beowulf “oozes” skill. His bravery, his combat skills, and his strength are evident in the way that he walks, carries himself, talks, and dresses. A good example of this occurs when Beowulf is on his way to see Hrothgar. A guard stops Beowulf in order to know Beowulf’s purpose.
Beowulf is a heroic poem, considered the highest achievement of Old English literature and the earliest European vernacular epic. It deals with events of the early 6th century CE and is believed to have been composed between 700 and 750.
Epics depict what happened in the past. They tell us about the happenings that shaped our culture. Epics are the proofs of our culture. They tell us about our history.
