Yes, UChicago is in an unsafe neighborhood. But all the protective measure that UChicago has in place makes it much safer than it would be otherwise.

There is no fun at the university of Chicago which is located in Hyde park on the South side of Chicago in a neighborhood so dangerous it is patrolled by both city of Chicago police and university of Chicago campus police.

UCLA AND OUR SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS The most common neighborhoods where graduate students live are Westwood, Culver City, West LA (Palms, Mar Vista, Rancho Park, Westchester, etc.), Mid-City, Santa Monica, Venice, Silverlake, Downtown LA, and of course on-campus.
All of the Houses are co-ed, but a few have single-sex floors. If it is important for you to live on an all-male or all-female floor, you can make your preference known on your housing application.
